25 cases under "journalistic articles" sent to court in 11 months

In the span of 11 months of 2021, law enforcement officers registered 225 criminal proceedings for crimes committed against members of the media. Of these, 25 charging papers were brought to court.

This is stated in the response of the Office of the Prosecutor General on December 17 to IMI's request regarding the progress of investigation into crimes against journalists in 2021.

In particular, among the proceedings brought to court:

  • 15 criminal proceedings under Article 171 of the Criminal Code (“Obstruction of the lawful professional activity of journalists”);
  • 10 criminal proceedings under Article 345-1 (“Threat or violence against a journalist”).

Of the total number of registered criminal proceedings, 165 were registered under Article 171 (“Obstruction of the lawful professional activity of journalists”) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, of which 93 were closed.

50 criminal proceedings - under Article 345-1 (“Threat or violence against a journalist”) of the Criminal Code, of which 12 are closed.

Law enforcement agencies also registered nine criminal proceedings under Article 347-1 (“Deliberate destruction or damage to a journalist’s property”), two of which were closed.

In addition, one criminal case was registered under Article 348-1 (“Assault on the life of a journalist”)

In 92 criminal proceedings for the period January-November 2021, no decision was made.

The Office of the Prosecutor General said at the request of IMI that in the first nine months of 2021, law enforcement officers registered 187 criminal proceedings for crimes committed against members of the media. Of these , 17 charges were investigated and submitted to court.

The National Police said that in the first nine months of 2021, 17 criminal proceedings for crimes against journalists were brought to court .

On September 14, Deputy Prosecutor General Igor Mustets said that in the eight months of 2021, law enforcement officers had filed 25 indictments in criminal proceedings against crimes committed against members of the media.  

In 2020, law enforcement agencies registered 249 criminal proceedings for crimes committed against members of the media. Of these, 16 indictments were investigated and brought to trial .

In 2019, 259 criminal proceedings were registered in respect of crimes committed against media workers. Of these, 14 indictments were submitted to the court .

In 2018 - 287 criminal proceedings for crimes committed against journalists. 22 of them were sent to court cases .
