Court of Kyiv arrested the Kazakh journalist. She went on hunger strike

Kyevo-Sviatoshynskyi court arrested the Kazakh journalist Zhanara Akhmet for 18 days. This was reported by Hromadske,  quoting the journalist’s attorney Vladyslav Hryshchenko.

This way, the journalist will have to stay in pre-trial detention facility for 15 days, counting the time already spent there.

The defense will contest this decision. Her attorney said that the reason was that the prosecutor’s office presented a certificate that Akhmet was denied a status of a political refugee. The attorney says that the certificate was just a photocopy and that the prosecutor’s office probably could not get it via legal means.

Zhanara Akhmet declared that she goes on hunger strike after the judgment.

Now, according to the procedure, the authorities of Kazakhstan are supposed to send a request on extradition within 18 days, and the Ukrainian party will have to make this decision.

As IMI reported before, on October 21, the journalist and blogger from Kazakhstan Zhanara Akhmet was detained in Kyiv region because of being on Interpol wanted list.

Zhanara Akhmet was forced to flee to Ukraine from Kazakhstan in March of 2017. In her home country, Akhmet is accused of fraud, but the journalist claims that this case was created because of her criticism against the authorities. Akhmet and her 9-year-old son live in Kyiv for less than a year, and request a political asylum in Ukraine.
